“I’ve learned that pushing myself beyond what comes naturally is what has helped me grow and helped my clients gain trust in me.” Here’s Jessica Miller’s #MyMotherHustle Story.

When and how did you begin your business? Give us the backstory!

When my oldest daughter, Gwen, was born in 2015, I left my job as an elementary school counselor to be a stay-at-home mama. While I loved spending my days with Gwen, I missed my counseling role and wanted to find a way to help others. So, in 2016, I became a certified pediatric sleep consultant after reading anything and everything about infant sleep habits to get my daughter sleeping well! I became passionate about baby sleep and started my business, Tiny ZZZ Sleep Consulting. I now love to empower parents to help their babies and toddlers get the rest they all need and deserve!

Tell us a little about your family.

I live just outside of Baltimore City with my adventure-loving husband, Greg. We have two girls—Gwen, our 3.5-year-old whom we have been calling #littlebutloud since day one, and the nickname same still holds true, and Margot, our 16-month-old sweet and sassy little gal. We also have a boxer dog, Jello. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧🐶

What were the biggest challenges you’ve faced or lessons you’ve learned since starting your business?

I never thought I would own my own business before becoming a sleep consultant. I always enjoyed working for a company or school system, and having a boss never bothered me. Yet, I began this business because I love to empower others and enjoy helping parents better their lives and the lives of their children through getting better quality and quantity sleep. Sometimes all of the behind-the-scenes tasks of owning a business—marketing, money talk, and simply just selling myself—are necessary for success, but can be outside of my comfort zone. I’ve learned that pushing myself beyond what comes naturally is what has helped me grow and helped my clients gain trust in me.

Every baby and family is different, and what works for some kids certainly doesn’t work for others. As with counseling, meeting my clients where they are in that moment in their parenting journey and being there to support them through tough days and nights goes a long way. When I get that text or phone call that a 6…12…18-month-old child or beyond slept through the night for the first time EVER!!… It’s all worth it. 🙂

How does motherhood affect or influence your business? Your creativity?

Motherhood (especially in those first precious months…sometimes years) and sleep— or lack thereof!—are so closely related. I know that being a mom takes so many things—patience, love, energy, sacrifice, etc., etc.—and without adequate sleep, it’s hard to think straight, much less function and be in charge of another little person as well.

Being a mama to two little ones helps me relate to my clients because I’m right there with them as my girls are going through different stages in their lives and ever-changing sleep needs. So when I say I get it, I really do. Yes, some kids seem to grasp the whole sleep thing more easily than others, but when my own babe wakes up in the middle of the night or skips a nap unexpectedly, it’s tough, but a great reminder for what some of my clients experience on a regular basis.

What advice would you give to a brand-new creative entrepreneur?

Remind yourself what your goals are and why you began this journey in the first place. It can be easy to lose sight of these things and get caught up in the details or minor setbacks. Always stay genuine and maintain the integrity of your business.  If you love what you do, the rest will fall into place.

What advice would you give to a brand-new mom?

Trust your gut, and ask for help when you need it. We all need it! Mom life is amazing, exhausting, beautiful, and everything in between. ❤️
