The MotherHustle Bookshelf | August 2017
HERE ARE THIS MONTH’S FAVORITE BOOKS FOR BUSINESS, FOR FUN AND FOR KIDS. WHAT ARE YOURS?

It’s the last Friday of August (yes, really, already), which means we’re rounding up our favorite books for business, for fun and for kids. Here’s hoping that once the kids are back in school, you can squeeze in some time to actually READ them. 🙂

FOR BUSINESS: THE ALCHEMIST

Ok, so you might be wondering why I chose this sparkling masterpiece by Paulo Coelho as a business book — but this one book has had more impact on my business path than any other “expert” guide I’ve read. It’s a beautiful story of exploration, of learning from mistakes, and of trusting your path. From the book’s description:

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, above all, following our dreams.

If you haven’t picked this one up yet, do it. Trust me, it will inspire some big business thinking.

FOR FUN: STATION ELEVEN

This one isn’t FUN, per se. In fact, it’s terrifying. But it’s an amazing read. Beautifully written by Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven is a post-apocalyptic tale about what happens to civilization once it’s nearly wiped out by a flu pandemic.

It follows a young woman and a traveling theatre troupe, and the story jumps back and forth in time to tell the story of both before and after the flu breakout. (Believe me, plenty of mistakes are made along the way.) If you’re looking for a rich story to lose yourself in, this is it.

FOR KIDS: DRAGONS LOVE TACOS

Dragons love tacos. But they hate spicy salsa. And in this fun, clever book by Adam Rubin, a little boy makes a big mistake with his dragon taco recipe … My kids have loved this book for years. It’s one of those always-favorites that I doubt will ever make it to the donate pile.

So that’s what’s on our MotherHustle bookshelf this month. What’s on yours? Share your favorite picks in the comments below, or over on Facebook or Instagram.
